Film ****

For decades, Hollywood has sensationalized Vampires, Witches, Ghosts and Haunted Houses on the big screen.   For a while during the 80s, there was a new horror film of some type coming out every month it seemed.

However, those crazy kids over at A&E are always on the lookout for ways to entertain as well as educate, and they have once again trumped Hollywood by putting together a comprehensive guide to the unknown with this five disc DVD box set called The Haunted Histories Collection: The Real Stories Behind History’s Spookiest Phenomena!

Take a walk through a haunted house, where the spirit of a man, trapped by his own actions, is making life a living heck for the unsuspecting new owners.  What will it take to set this disturbed spirit free, and will the family who has to live with him be able to cope until they do?

In 1692 things were heating up for people in Salem, Massachusetts…literally!  The history behind the Salem witch trials was fascinating for me.  Were any of the nineteen men and women who were killed during this time actual witches, or were they victims of sadistic young women who prized their own fame over the lives of the people they accused?

Okay, I have to say this…you do not have to be a believer in the spooky and unnatural to watch these DVDs.  I promise you will find these five shows entertaining and educational no matter how much you do or do not believe.

Each individual DVD is put together so that you can learn a bit about the history behind the types of events (hauntings, poltergeists, etc..) it is displaying, while at the same time, providing eye witness accounts of the events depicted.  In order to make these DVDs fair and balanced, skeptics and experts from many different fields were brought in to provide plausible explanations for the phenomena that people claim to have seen or been a part of.  This box set is one of the most well rounded and open minded approaches to unexplained phenomena that I have come across yet.

Personally, I believe anything is possible so long as you have an open mind and a good imagination.  The Haunted Histories Collection for me was very exciting and fun to watch.  I have already re-watched a few of the DVDs multiple times and cannot get over how much new information I take in each time.

Whether you believe in the occult or not, I think even the most skeptical of skeptics will be able to find something about this box set to enjoy.  Open that creaky door to the unknown by purchasing these DVDs today!

Video ***

The 1.33:1 Standard Full-screen presentation for these DVDs was nice.  In true A&E fashion the colors were sharp, and the use of shadow and light helped set a visual mood that permeated throughout all five discs.  While I don’t believe these shows were originally recorded in digital format, their transfer to this realm was very nicely done!

Audio **

The audio levels on the majority of these DVDs was disappointing.

The levels were all over the place, and dialogue was sometimes hard to understand. There was a lot of hiss and background noise that could have been filtered out to make these DVDs sound much better than they did.

Features (zero stars)

There were no extra features for these DVDs…but can you imagine if there were!

In depth interviews with the actual ghosts themselves.  How did they feel about the camera crews being there.  What possessed (no pun intended) them to haunt these houses.

The wicked witch speaks out about the loss of her sister, and what it took to rebuild her life after everything just melted away! A Dracula exclusive, Vlad explains how vampires shave without a mirror, and his secret to perfect dental hygiene while on the go!

Vlad: “You just have to make sure to floss between meals, it is truly the only way to prevent tooth decay!”

Whether you believe in ghosts, vampires, witches, or poltergeists doesn’t really matter.  What matters is how much entertainment value you will get out of this box set when you view it.
