“Payback’s a motherf*cker, Spider-Man!”
I’ve come to realize a little something interesting about reality television. We all know to a certain extent that all these kinds of shows are scripted. However, the ones that KNOW they are scripted and are fully aware of the absurdity end up being the best, where as all the others end up being just flat out embarrassments.
A great example of such a show is MTV’s Rob & Big, which takes a real life scenario and plugs it into some awesomely funny stuff. It falls more into the vein of Jackass and Viva la Bam, which were also funny reality based shows. Each episode carries a scripted plotline, which the show seems fully aware of, and just has the most ridiculous fun it can possibly have with it.
The reality sitcom chronicles the everyday mishaps of skateboarding pro/mogul Rob Dyrdek and his longtime bodyguard, Big. You simply never know what these two are planning to get into next. Just sheer random thoughts or ideas provide the basis for an entire episode, and the results are often more than hilarious.
And this season, Rob and Big are getting their friends and pets mixed in with all the insanity. Rob’s cousin/slave, named simply Drama, becomes the victim of many a prank. And Rob makes sure that his two loyal pets, bulldog Meaty and Mini the mini-horse, get some much needed camera attention.
Included in this 3-Disc set are all 15 uncensored Season Three episodes, and some of these episode titles should indicate what kind of mischief Rob & Big get into:
DISC ONE:
Poop In the Pool
Racing Turtles
Mini-Horse Road Trip
Meaty Goes to Hollywood
Guinness
Big Bob
DISC TWO:
Charity
Harry the Healer
Dating Game
Vegas
Meaty’s Birthday
Parents
DISC THREE:
Cancun
Haunted House
Baby
Just like the Season One and Two package, Season Three is presented in a non-anamorphic widescreen format. Not exactly the best sort of presentation for a DVD format, but it could be much worse. I think it’s safe to say at this point that we can expect the same kind of picture format on future seasons of the show, which isn’t a bad thing because it sort of works to the show’s advantage.
Audio ***
The 2.0 mix once again serves this series quite well. Mainly a dialogue driven show, it does occasionally turn up the physical comedy factor, which is captured nicely in the sound area. Music playback is also nice bonus.
Features **1/2
This 3-Disc package from MTV/Paramount includes Audio Commentary on several episodes from Rob, Big and series creators, as well as Deleted Scenes and another a collection of scenes titled “The Best, the Worst and Unused”.
Summary:
MTV’s “Odd Couple” of reality TV are back for another madcap season of insanely funny behavior. The Uncensored 3rd Season of Rob & Big is another fast and funny experience that will satisfy anyone who got immediately won over, as I did, by the first two seasons!
